We recently hosted a year 10 work experience student from Darwin High School in our office. Jayson was enthusiastic toward the prospect of becoming an architect and we were pleased to hose him for a valuable and rewarding opportunity. These placements bring fresh energy and curiosity into the office, often sparking new conversations. Students are eager to learn, ask thoughtful questions, and are genuinely excited to be part of a professional design environment, which can be contagious and uplifting for staff. It’s also a meaningful way for professionals to give back to the community and nurture the next generation of architects and designers. Involving students in real-world tasks like model-making, site visits, drafting, or sitting in on project meetings helps them understand the complexities of architectural practice in ways no classroom can replicate. At the same time, it gives the office a chance to reflect on its own processes and mentoring approach. Their presence encourages a culture of learning, patience, and teamwork. Importantly, it helps students make informed decisions about their career path and can open doors for future study or employment. Overall, hosting work experience students enriches the office environment, fosters a stronger architectural community, and leaves a lasting impact on both the students and the mentors involved.
